The list of things to do when arriving in or leaving Okinawa can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s your first or fifth move, it can be undeniably stressful—especially when you’re trying to navigate daily life while waiting for your household goods to arrive. The Lending Locker Okinawa at Camp Butler, Okinawa, aims to ease some of that stress by providing basic household items for temporary rental.

The Lending Locker is available to individuals and families both arriving in and departing from Okinawa. Items can be rented for a 30-day period. Lending Lockers are located at Camps Foster, Courtney, Hansen, and Kinser, inside the Personal and Professional Development – Resources facilities. These Resource Centers are closed on weekends and holidays, with operating hours from 0730 to 1630. You do not have to live on these specific bases to use the service. If a 30-day rental isn’t sufficient, extensions may be granted with communication to the center.

What’s Included in A Lending Locker Okinawa

Items available for loan include pots, pans, flatware, irons, and other kitchen essentials. All items are free to rent with a copy of official orders. As long as your sponsor provides the orders, they may pick up the rentals on your behalf—perfect for having things ready on your first day! To streamline the process, use the attached Eventbrite link to reserve a pickup time. Be sure to arrive on time, as items may be given to the next person on the waitlist if you’re late. Please note that availability may be limited during peak PCS season, so scheduling in advance is highly recommended.

What makes the Lending Locker Okinawa especially unique is that it’s organized on a volunteer basis, which adds an extra layer of community involvement and support. Volunteers are the heart of the program, helping to ensure that items are available, organized, and ready for use by those in need. If you’re looking to meet others who are at a similar stage of the PCS process, volunteering can be a great way to build connections and friendships. It’s a fantastic way to bond with others who understand the challenges of military life and relocation. Not only can you have a furnished home through the Lending Locker, but you also have the opportunity to get out and engage with your community in meaningful ways. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose and connection during what can be a stressful time. Resources like the Lending Locker are invaluable during a PCS transition—whether you’re settling in or preparing to move out, it can make a huge difference in easing the logistical challenges. So even if you didn’t use it when moving in, be sure to take advantage of it before you check out! It’s a great resource to ensure your move-out process is just as smooth as your move-in.
