Southeast Botanical Gardens is one of Japan’s largest outdoor botanical gardens, spanning 100 acres of meticulously curated grounds with over 2,000 plant species and over 50 animal species. The Gardens is located only a few minutes from Kadena Gate 3 and is open daily. This exotic zoo should absolutely be on your Okinawa bucket-list!

Alexander Palms

Southeast Botanical Gardens

The Garden’s Alexander Palm-lined street is the perfect backdrop for some Instagram worthy pics. The Alexander Palms are very tall and shoot straight up toward the heavens. This street is a popular spiritual spot as well.

Za Baobab

Za Baobab, originating in Madagascar, are found at the Gardens. The leaves are eaten as a vegetable and the roots are used in medicine. It is known as the “treasure tree” because no part of the tree is wasted.

Lotus Flowers

Pink and white lotus flowers are grown here and start to bloom as soon as Okinawa enters its rainy season in May/June. The pond becomes covered in the beautiful flowers.

Dragon Blood Trees

Dragon blood trees produce a dark red raisin referred to as dragon’s blood. The Gardens provide an opportunity to see a grove of these trees.

Popular Animals in Southeast Botanical Gardens

Capybaras, the world’s largest South American rodent, have found home at the Gardens. For only ¥300, (6 years old and over), you can meet several of them as they roll around in the dirt and wait for your pets and snack offerings. Nearby the capybaras, squirrel monkeys are available to pet as well.

The Gardens also offers bird performance shows on the weekends and daily Goat Island tours. Be sure to check their website for up-to-date Petting Zoo and Show hours.

Light Illumination Shows

From October to May, the Gardens displays incredible light illuminations. Millions of holiday lights are on display that blends nature and the magic of illumination. See lighted palm trees, lawns carpeted with lights, and lights accentuating the plant life of the Gardens. The annual display has ranked as one of the best light displays across Japan.

The Castle of Light, fit for royalty, is a captivating display and great for photos. Look out for the tropical-inspired Christmas tree with butterflies and flowers. It is a truly magical experience!

Restaurant Peace

Located inside the Gardens, Restaurant Peace focuses on healing and health, offering local ingredients to satisfy your body and mind. Make a reservation for lunch or dinner on their website. From June to September, Paradise Taiwanese Breakfast is offered on weekends and holidays.
