Playgrounds in Okinawa, Japan are next level compared to anything in America. They really take their playing seriously here. With the cultural concepts of respect and kindness at the forefront, most parks remain intact and offer structures that you might not typically see in the states. Some features that are popular here are roller slides, multi-level climbing structures, rope climbing areas and zip lines.

You’ll see parks from simple swings and slides, to the bigger multi-level playgrounds you can easily get lost in. With it being so safe here, playing on busy playgrounds in Okinawa doesn’t create as much fear and anxiety as letting your kids explore in America. This is great because so many playgrounds in Okinawa have hidden tunnels, small spaces, and spaces that most adults would have trouble getting to.

Playgrounds in Okinawa: Roller Slide Parks

Roller slide parks are a favorite as it’s definitely not something you see in the states. It is a slide, usually quite long, that instead of being a slippery plastic is a set of metal rods that roll as you go over them. You pick up speed as you go down so watch out. The key to enjoying these types of slides is getting a plastic roller slide seat at any of the 100 Yen Shops (the local dollar stores), Makeman, Tabata or Cainz. The seats save your bottom while going down the roller slide as well as, to every kid’s delight, increase your speed while going down.

Playgrounds in Okinawa: Multi-Level Parks

Multi-level parks are parks that just seem to keep going up and up and up. Every corner you turn seems to just bring you higher. They have areas of climbing ropes and so many levels to climb around.

Playgrounds in Okinawa: Rope Parks

Do you remember the cargo net climb back in middle school? These rope/net parks are similar to that. There are parks with sections of rope climbing areas and there are parks that are just rope climbing. If they are paid entry or near other attractions, these tend to close in the rain.
