Navigating Okinawa’s narrow roads and discovering its hidden gems is not just a privilege but a necessity, which is why your SOFA drivers license is so important. Enter the realm of SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) – a crucial document granting military personnel and their dependents access to a myriad of privileges, including the coveted SOFA driver’s license.
Where Do I Go To Get My SOFA Drivers License?
For Air Force families, you want to head to the 18th Security Forces Squadron Pass and Registration Office, located at the entrance of Kadena AB Gate 1. If you need transportation, Panda Taxi is a great option. Be sure to schedule an appointment on their website here. Keep in mind that the office is open Mon-Fri 0730-1600 and closed the last Friday of the month, all Federal Holidays and most Family Days.
What Do I Bring To My Appointment?
You will need to bring a copy of your orders, your current stateside driver’s license, DoD ID Card, and answer sheet for your driver’s test.
The Multiple Choice Driver’s Test
The driver’s test is a 20-question multiple choice local conditions test. It is imperative that you understand how driving works in Okinawa, as it is much different than stateside. Traffic Safety & Driving in Japan and the USAF SOFA Drivers Course are available resources for learning the ins and outs of Japanese traffic laws. When you are finished reviewing, refer to the driver’s test and write your numbered answers on a piece of paper to bring with you to your appointment.
What To Expect After You Pass
The personnel at the Pass and Registration Office will then grade your answer sheet. If you pass, they will collect your other documents and issue your SOFA driver’s license. Congrats! You passed your SOFA Drivers License Test!
What If I Want to Drive a Motorcycle in Okinawa?
Motorcycle licenses are separate from your SOFA driver’s license and they require more training. You must have a valid SOFA driver’s license prior to applying for the motorcycle license. To receive your motorcycle license you must then complete the Basic Rider’s Course from the Motorcycle Safety Office on Kadena AB. Passing a skills test is also required as part of the Basic Rider’s Course, and you must have access to a registered motorcycle to complete the Course. Keep in mind, class registration fills up quickly, so be sure to plan accordingly! For questions, contact the Motorcycle Safety Office at DSN 634-2450.
