While the number of cafes in Okinawa is plentiful, a vegan cafe is hard to come by. Cafe Halcyon, located in the Chatan District, is the perfect vibey vegan cafe that needs to be your next stop!

Owner Sarah, who was born and raised in Okinawa, opened Cafe Halcyon in October of 2019 after traveling to Paris and discovering a love for crepes. Traditionally, crepes contain dairy and gluten, which can be very limiting to individuals with dietary restrictions, but Sarah cultivated the perfect non-dairy recipe. Cafe Halcyon started as a pop-up shop in American Village called Pizza Sun, and the Okinawan vegan community was instantly hooked. The menu range is wide. From a sweet Banana Nut option filled with nut butter, banana, and soy whipped cream to a savory Taco crepe. The menu is truly unique, allowing vegan individuals to enjoy a nice treat with options like soy-based meats and vegan cheeses. There are so many unique twists to the classic crepe toppings, and half sizes are available if you are looking for a light snack. There is even a gluten-free crepe option! However, it is important to note that they use the same equipment to prepare all crepes. So, if you are extremely gluten-sensitive or have celiac disease, their drink menu may have a more suitable option for you.

Sarah strives to keep the ingredients fresh, local, and made in-house. You’ll find that the menu ventures far beyond crepes. Smoothies, matcha, and coffee are also on the menu, all available with soy, almond, or oat milk. The coffee is locally sourced through Pittmans Coffee, a small coffee roaster located on Kadena Air Base. Pittmans sells ground and whole bean bags at their shop. If you want to try a cup before you purchase, Cafe Halcyon is your place. Also, to-go options are available for their drinks if you are looking for a quick pick-me-up.

Cafe Halcyon provides an inclusive place for everyone to relax with an amazing view and even better vibes. Whether you are on the go to your next location or leisurely walking the seawall, there will always be a place for you to sit and enjoy.
