Making phone calls is quite different when living in Okinawa. There are some emergency phone numbers in Okinawa you need to know and should have on hand. These numbers not only include emergency services (you can’t just call 911), housing, and some additional service locations that are important to have on hand.

There are usually several different phone numbers listed for each location, so which one do you need? How do you even call out on your cell phone? When you first go to the newcomer’s brief you should be given a sheet that tells you how to call the phone numbers on base if you are calling from a cell phone. The prefix to the phone number you’re calling will differ if you’re calling a location on Camp Butler (which encompasses all Marine Corps bases) or on Kadena Air Base.

If you aren’t sure how to dial out or just need help calling an on-base location, you can call either Camp Butler or Kadena Air Base operators.

READ THIS FIRST ABOUT EMERGENCY NUMBERS IN OKINAWA

For the most part, you will dial +81 before any phone number if you have an American phone number. You will drop the 0 before the rest of the number (i.e., +81 98…rest of phone number)

If you are calling from a Japanese phone number, you do not need to dial +81. It will be 098…rest of phone number.

This also goes for inputting phone numbers in your phone for texting. If you have an American number, you will want to add +81, drop the 0 then the rest of the phone number. If you have a Japanese phone number, you do not need to add +81. However, if you have a Japanese phone number you will need to put +1 for any American phone number you are calling or texting.

If you’re calling from an on-base phone (i.e., work phone) to another on-base phone you can call using the DSN number.
